Duplex stainless steel 2205 alloy is a compound stainless steel composed of 22% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel nitrogen alloy. It has high strength, good impact toughness and good overall and local stress corrosion resistance.

The yield strength of 2205 duplex stainless steel is more than double that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel. This characteristic allows designers to reduce weight when designing products, giving this alloy a price advantage over 316,317L. This alloy is particularly suitable for the temperature range of -50°F/+600°F. For applications beyond this temperature range, this alloy may also be considered, but there are some limitations, especially when applied to welded structures. Due to the chromium (22%), molybdenum (3%) and nitrogen (0.18%) content,2205 has better corrosion resistance than 316L and 317L in most environments. Local corrosion resistance The content of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in the 2205 duplex stainless steel makes it highly resistant to pitting and gap corrosion in oxidizing and acidic solutions. Stress corrosion resistance The two-phase microstructure of stainless steel is helpful to improve the stress corrosion cracking resistance of stainless steel. Chloride stress corrosion occurs in austenitic stainless steels under certain temperature, tension, oxygen and chloride conditions. As these conditions are not easily controlled, the use of 304L, 316L and 317L is limited in this regard. Corrosion fatigue The high strength and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex steel make it have high corrosion fatigue strength. The processing equipment is susceptible to corrosive environments and loading cycles, and the characteristics of 2205 are ideal for such applications.

2205 Characteristic machining technology

1D -- The surface has discontinuous granular shape, also known as fog surface. Processing technology: hot rolling + annealing shot peening pickling + cold rolling + annealing pickling. 2D - A slightly silvery white colour. Processing technology: hot rolling + annealing shot peening pickling + cold rolling + annealing pickling. 2B -- Silver white with better gloss and flatness than a 2D surface. Processing technology: hot rolling + annealing shot peening pickling + cold rolling + annealing pickling + quenching and tempering rolling. Ba - Excellent surface gloss, high reflectivity, like a mirror surface. Processing technology: hot rolling + annealing shot peening pickling + cold rolling + annealing pickling + surface polishing + quenching and tempering rolling. No.3 -- Good gloss, coarse grain surface. Processing technology: polishing and tempering rolling for 2D or 2B with 100~120 abrasive materials (JIS R6002). No.4 -- Good gloss, fine lines on the surface. Processing process: polishing and tempering rolling for 2D or 2B with 150~180 abrasive materials (JIS R6002). HL -- Silver grey with hair streaks.
