Stainless steel 310S / stainless steel 310H / AISI 310S/H / 1.4845

Alloy stainless steel 310 (UNS S31000) is an austenitic stainless steel that was developed for use in corrosion-resistant applications at high temperatures. This alloy is oxidation proof up to temperatures of 2010oF (1100oC) under mild cyclical conditions. Due to the high chromium and moderate nickel content, Alloy stainless steel 310 is also sulfidation resistant and can also be used in moderate carbonisation conditions. The heavier carbonisation atmospheres of thermal processing equipment usually require nickel alloys such as 330 (UNS N08330). Alloy 310 can be used for applications that involve light oxidation, nitration, cementation and thermal cycling. Alloy 310 is also used in cryogenic applications with a low magnetic permeability and toughness of up -450oF (-268 ° C). When heated to between 1202 - 1742oF (650 - 950oC), this alloy is subject to sigma-phase precipitation. Annealing with a solution at 2012 - 2102oF (1100 - 1150oC) will restore a certain measure of toughness. Stainless steel 310S (UNS S31008) is the version of the alloy with a low carbon content. It is used because it is easy to manufacture. stainless steel 310H (UNS S31009) is a carbon-rich modification that has been developed to achieve better creep resistance. In most cases, the grain size and carbon content of the material are in line with both the stainless steel 310S and 310H requirements. Alloy 310 is easy to weld and process using standard manufacturing techniques.

310/310S Stainless Steel Overview

Stainless steel 310/310S is an austenitic heat resistant alloy with excellent resistance to oxidation under mildly cyclic conditions through 2000°F. Its high chromium and nickel contents provide comparable corrosion resistance, superior resistance to oxidation and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic alloys like Type 304. Stainless 310 is often used at cryogenic temperatures, with excellent toughness to -450°F, and low magnetic permeability.
**As you can see below, Grade 310S is a low carbon version of grade 310. 310S is less prone to embrittlement and sensitization in service.

Fabrication with Stainless 310/310S

Type 310/310S is readily fabricated by standard commercial procedures. In comparison to carbon steel, stainless steels are tougher and tend to work harden rapidly. Type 310/310S can be welded using all of the common welding processes.
