Type 317L is a low carbon austenitic stainless steel version of Type 317 that offers improved corrosion resistance over Type 304/304L. Some of the other major benefits of Type 317L include:
- Better general and localized corrosion resistance compared to 316/316L stainless steel
- Good formability and weldability
- Increased resistance to chemical attack from acids
- Lower carbon content leads to resistance to sensitization when welded
- Non-magnetic
Like all stainless steels, Type 317L has a unique chemical composition that includes the following:
- Fe Balance
- Cr 18-20%
- Ni 11-15%
- Mn 2%
- Si 0.75%
- C 0.03%
- N 0.1%
- S 0.03%
- P 0.045%
Because of Type 317L benefits and chemical composition, it is used extensively in a variety of industries for many applications including:
- Paper and pulp equipment
- Chemical and petrochemical processing
- Food processing
- Power generation including fossil fuels and nuclear
- Flue gas desulfurization systems
